How to Show Measurements in Ad Photos When Selling in Ireland
Help buyers judge size with clear measurement photos: label width, depth and height, show the tape correctly, and repeat accurate dimensions in your Irish ad.
To show measurements in ad photos, identify the dimension, make the start and end points clear, and repeat the result in your description. A photograph of a tape stretched across an unidentified edge leaves buyers guessing. Aim to show what was measured, which unit you used and whether handles, legs or other protruding parts are included.
Decide what the buyer needs to fit
Start with the complete item's external width, depth and height. Then consider the question those numbers do not answer. A desk buyer may need the space underneath for a chair; someone buying a storage unit may need the internal shelf width.
Separate overall dimensions from usable space. For example, a cabinet can be 80cm wide externally while its interior is narrower. Label those as different measurements rather than presenting both numbers as the cabinet's width.
For furniture, the Irish furniture selling guide explains the other details buyers need before arranging collection.
Make the tape's position understandable
Take an overall photograph before adding measurement pictures. In each measurement view, include enough of the object to identify the edge or opening. Keep the tape straight along the dimension you are measuring, with its starting point at the stated edge.
Check where the scale actually begins instead of assuming the end of a handle or plastic housing is zero. If you cannot show both ends legibly in one photograph, use an overview plus a closer view of the reading. Explain that they show the same measurement.
Use a single stated unit, such as centimetres, throughout the listing. If your tape shows inches as well, make sure the photograph and written figure refer to the same scale.
Name the dimension in words
Write “width, left to right across the front” rather than uploading three tape photographs and expecting buyers to identify each one. Describe depth as front to back and height as bottom to top, adding any relevant explanation for an unusual shape.
For a round tabletop, say that you measured the diameter through the centre. For an extending table, give the closed and extended dimensions separately. Include protruding handles or feet in the overall measurement and explain when a part is removable.
A simple description might read: “Overall dimensions approximately 80cm wide × 40cm deep × 75cm high, including the feet.” Replace these example figures with your own measurements.
Choose photos that answer different questions
ClassifiedAds.ie allows up to eight photos per ad. You do not need to fill every slot with a tape measure. A useful sequence could include the complete item, width, depth, height, a relevant internal opening, included parts and visible wear.
Keep the numbers readable without cropping away all context. Check the pictures on your phone before uploading. If a measurement is unclear, retake it rather than drawing in a more convenient figure. Our general listing photography guide covers the rest of the photo sequence.
Check the description before publishing
- Each figure names the dimension and unit.
- External and internal measurements are distinguished.
- Closed, extended or dismantled states are identified.
- Photos and written dimensions agree.
- Approximate measurements are labelled honestly.
If a buyer asks whether an item will fit, you can reply: “The measurements in the ad include the handles and feet. Is there another specific dimension you need me to check?” Avoid promising that it will fit their room, doorway or vehicle from dimensions you have not seen.
