How to Sell Second-Hand Furniture in Ireland Without Collection Problems
Selling furniture in Ireland? Learn what to photograph, which measurements to include and how to arrange collection for sofas, tables and wardrobes.
Selling second-hand furniture involves more than finding someone who likes it. The buyer also needs to know whether it will fit their home, their vehicle and the route between the two.
Whether you are selling a sofa in Dublin, a dining table in Galway or a wardrobe in Waterford, clear measurements and collection details can prevent wasted journeys.
Measure before you advertise
Record width, depth and height in centimetres. For a dining table, include its extended length if it has an extension. For a sofa, include the overall dimensions and whether the legs can be removed.
Describe whether the item comes apart. If a wardrobe can be dismantled, explain whether you will dismantle it before collection or whether the buyer must do that themselves.
Do not guess measurements. A difference of a few centimetres can determine whether something fits through a doorway.
Show the condition honestly
Take one photograph showing the full item, followed by close-ups of surfaces, joints and any damage.
For upholstered furniture, describe stains, tears, sagging cushions and noticeable odours. Mention relevant household details, such as whether the item has been used in a home with pets, if you can state them accurately.
For wooden furniture, show scratches, chips and repaired sections. If the item is unstable or has a structural problem, explain that clearly rather than treating it as ordinary cosmetic wear.
Price the item with collection in mind
Compare furniture of a similar size, material, brand and condition. A solid wood table should not automatically be priced against a lightweight flat-pack table because both seat four people.
Consider the buyer’s practical costs too. Van hire, lifting help and dismantling can affect what someone is willing to pay.
If clearing space quickly is your priority, decide on a realistic price from the beginning. Avoid advertising an item as free or €1 when you expect a substantially higher payment.
Give useful collection information
State your general area and explain access. Buyers may need to know whether the furniture is upstairs, whether there is a lift and whether parking is available nearby.
Ask them to confirm that they have read the measurements and arranged suitable transport. Explain whether two people are needed and whether you can assist with loading.
Do not promise lifting help you cannot safely provide.
Agree one collection arrangement
Confirm the day, approximate time and payment method with the chosen buyer. Ask them to message if their plans change.
For home collection, keep the item accessible where practical and consider having another adult present. Avoid publishing your full address or inviting several people to arrive at once.
A useful furniture ad lets the buyer picture the item and plan its collection. Add those details before you advertise your furniture on ClassifiedAds.ie.
