How to Price Second-Hand Items in Ireland

Price second-hand items using comparable offers, actual condition, included accessories and collection costs, without mistaking asking prices for sold prices.

To price second-hand items, compare the closest matching products and adjust for condition, missing parts and practical collection or delivery costs. For an Irish private sale, treat advertised prices as comparisons rather than proof of completed-sale value, and choose a review point that suits your own deadline.

Before you start

  • Identify the closest model, size or material comparison.
  • Separate private ads from different retail or refurbished offers.
  • Record differences before choosing an asking price.

Identify the closest comparison

Write down the brand, model, age where known, size and included accessories. Compare a complete coffee machine with the same model, rather than a newer machine from the same brand. For unbranded furniture, compare dimensions, materials and condition instead.

Look at several examples. Separate shop prices, refurbished stock and private ads because the offers may include different services or assurances. If all you have is an asking price, record it as an asking price. Do not describe it as a completed sale.

Make a condition adjustment you can explain

List the differences between your item and the closest examples. Missing shelves, worn upholstery, an absent charger or a damaged finish can change what a buyer needs to spend. An original box may be useful, but it does not cancel a significant defect.

Avoid a fixed rule such as deducting the same percentage from every original retail price. Different products age differently, and an old receipt does not establish current demand. If you cannot find a close match, explain that uncertainty and choose a price you are comfortable reviewing.

Include the buyer's practical costs

A large table available for collection outside a town may involve a van, helpers and a long journey. A small item with expensive packing can cost more to receive than a buyer expects. Make collection locality, dimensions and any agreed delivery cost clear.

For example, two identical shelves can be different offers if one is assembled upstairs and the other is packed with all fittings. Describe the access honestly rather than assuming the buyer will solve it after agreeing a price.

Choose your asking price and review point

Decide your acceptable amount privately, whether offers are welcome and when you will review the ad. Leave room only if you actually intend to negotiate. Do not advertise an artificially low price and reveal a higher required amount in messages.

If there are no enquiries, check the title, photos and collection details before repeatedly reducing the price. The quiet listing checklist helps separate an unclear offer from a pricing issue.

Keep a short record of the comparisons and changes you made. Once the item sells, mark it sold and retain your own transaction notes. Create a free ad with the price, contents and condition aligned.
