How to Write a Classified Ad: Irish Seller Template
Write a clear classified ad with a practical title and description template covering the item, condition, included parts, measurements and collection.
To write a classified ad, identify the actual item in the title and explain the complete offer in the first sentence. Then add measurements or specifications, observable condition and collection details. Use plain language that helps someone compare the item without sending several basic questions.
Before you start
- Use the product name and one useful identifying detail.
- Make the price, photographs and included contents agree.
- Keep precise addresses and private documents out of the public ad.
Build the title around identification
Use the item type, recognisable brand or model, and one genuinely useful distinguishing detail. “Oak dining table, 150 cm, with four chairs” identifies an offer. “Amazing deal, first to see will buy” does not.
For electronics, the model and storage may matter more than colour. For clothing, type and labelled size may be more useful than the event where you wore it. Keep the title readable and relevant instead of repeating town names or unrelated brands.
Write the first sentence as a complete offer
State what is for sale and what is included. For example: “Used rectangular dining table with four matching chairs; the photographed place settings are not included.” This is an illustrative template, not a listing for an actual item.
Follow with dimensions or specifications taken from the item. Explain how you measured where it could be ambiguous. The description should agree with the selected category, price and photographs rather than adding a different offer halfway through.
Describe condition with observable details
Replace “perfect for its age” with what you can show: a scratch on the left edge, wear on two chair seats, or a working drawer with a missing handle. Mention repairs and known limitations. If you have not checked a function, say so.
A simple structure is:
- Item and model: identify the exact product.
- Contents: list accessories, fittings or separate pieces.
- Measurements: give units and useful dimensions.
- Condition: describe use, wear, repairs and known faults.
- Collection: name the general area and explain access.
Do not publish a home address, personal paperwork or account details in the ad. Agree precise collection arrangements privately.
Finish with the next practical step
Explain whether collection or agreed postage is available and whether the price is for one item or a bundle. Only promise a demonstration or dismantling if you can actually provide it. Avoid claims about warranties or authenticity you cannot support.
Read the draft as someone who has never seen the product. Remove contradictory details, check spelling of model names and ensure the photographs show the current condition. The bundle-or-separate guide can help define a mixed offer.
Use this structure when you place a free ad, then answer further questions consistently with the public listing. If an answer affects every buyer, update the description too.
Compare related listings
Browse classified ads in Ireland to compare the actual contents and condition of other offers. Advertised prices do not establish completed-sale values.
