How to Sell a Second-Hand Rug in Ireland: Size, Backing and Condition

Give rug buyers useful dimensions, material information and clear photographs of the surface and backing, with practical collection and packing advice.

A rug can change the feel of a room, but a buyer needs to know more than its colour. Size, backing condition and cleaning requirements all affect whether it suits their space. Prepare a listing around the actual rug rather than a styled photograph that hides most of it beneath furniture.

Measure the usable rug

Give length and width and explain whether fringe is included in those measurements. For a round rug, give the diameter. Note an unusual shape or irregular edge rather than rounding the dimensions until they resemble a standard size.

Identify the material from the label if available. Do not call something wool, silk or handmade based on appearance alone. If the label is missing, describe the look and feel without turning an uncertain impression into a premium-material claim.

Show the surface and reverse

Photograph the whole rug, close-ups of texture and the underside. Include worn patches, stains, curled edges and damaged backing. Colour can look different under indoor light, so offer an ordinary daylight image where practical and avoid filters.

Explain any pet use, noticeable odour or cleaning requirement you know about. Do not guarantee that a buyer will find the rug suitable for allergies. If there is mould or infestation, use an appropriate specialist or disposal route rather than treating it as ordinary resale wear.

Describe cleaning honestly

Follow the care instructions if you clean it before listing. A home vacuum is not professional cleaning, and a previous treatment does not prove every mark has disappeared. If you have a recent cleaning receipt, describe what it covers without publishing private contact details.

List any underlay included separately. Do not promise that a rug or underlay will be non-slip on every surface or suitable beside every heat source; the next owner should follow appropriate product guidance for their home.

Plan the collection shape

Say whether you expect to roll or fold the rug, using its care guidance. Give the approximate rolled length so the buyer can judge transport. Keep it dry and protected instead of leaving it outside for collection in wet weather.

Compare rugs of similar size, material and condition when pricing. Place your rug ad, or see selling curtains if you are changing several room furnishings together.
