Selling Bookcases and Shelving in Ireland: Measure the Shelves and Count the Fittings

Prepare shelving ads with exterior and shelf measurements, complete fitting lists and honest condition notes before agreeing dismantling and collection.

A bookcase can be the right height for a wall yet have shelves too shallow for the buyer's books or boxes. A useful ad separates exterior size from usable storage. Empty the furniture and count shelves and fittings before photographing it.

Show what fits inside

Give the full height, width and depth. Add shelf depth and the space between fixed shelves, or explain the adjustment range where known. Identify unusual shapes, sloping sections or a back panel that reduces the usable space.

State whether the unit is freestanding or designed for wall mounting. If several modules are shown together, explain whether the price covers the whole arrangement or one section. Do not call a partial system complete because it fills a corner of your room.

Count the parts buyers will need

List adjustable shelves, shelf supports, doors, handles and relevant connectors. Photograph them where useful. A missing peg or bracket may prevent normal use, so describe it before negotiation rather than expecting the buyer to find an easy replacement.

Keep the model's instructions and follow its mounting or anti-tip guidance. Do not advertise wall fittings as suitable for every wall type. The next installation needs the correct components and method for the product and surface concerned.

Describe structure and finish separately

Show chips, bowed shelves, loose joints, damaged backs and water marks. Distinguish a cosmetic scratch from damage affecting stability. Avoid giving a load capacity unless you can identify the exact manufacturer's specification.

Photograph the unit assembled from several angles. Explain refinishing or alterations you know about. If you cannot identify the material, say so instead of advertising a wood-effect finish as solid timber.

Agree the dismantling plan

Some assembled furniture does not travel or reassemble well. Explain previous disassembly and current fitting condition. If it can be taken apart normally, agree who will do it and keep labelled fittings together. Allow enough time for collection without turning it into an improvised moving job.

Give general access details, ask for suitable transport and confirm payment independently at handover. Create a shelving ad, or read the spare-room reset guide to decide which storage is still useful before you list it.
