Moving House in Ireland? Plan What to Sell Before Moving Day
Plan a manageable moving-house clear-out in Ireland, with separate decisions for selling, keeping and donating items and realistic collection windows.
Moving day is a poor time to discover that a buyer cannot collect a wardrobe or that the fridge is still full. A planned clear-out gives you more control over pricing and handover. Begin with what will fit and be useful in the new home, then decide what genuinely needs another owner.
Make three separate decisions
Sort belongings into items to keep, items worth selling and items suited to donation, recycling or disposal. Do not turn unsafe or unusable goods into a “free collection” listing simply to move a problem elsewhere.
Check the new home's measurements where available before deciding to keep large furniture. A desk that fits the room may still fail to fit the stairs. Consider transport and replacement effort, not just what you originally paid for the item.
Start with awkward items
List bulky furniture and heavy appliances while you still have time to answer questions and arrange access. Photograph them assembled and record dimensions before packing or dismantling. Explain stairs, lifting requirements and whether the buyer needs tools.
Use a general collection window without publishing your moving date, absence plans or full address. Share detailed arrangements privately with the chosen buyer. Keep essential items available for your own needs until the agreed collection time.
Keep each listing manageable
Use separate ads for items with different buyers or collection requirements. A complete matching dining set can make sense as one offer, but an entire room photographed together often creates confusion. Label boxes or fittings belonging to sold items so they are not accidentally loaded into the removal van.
Review prices against comparable items and your actual deadline. Reducing a price is a choice you can make openly; avoid showing an item as free when you expect a payment at the door.
Build in a fallback
Allow a buffer for missed appointments. Decide in advance what you will do if an item remains, and check availability directly with any donation or disposal service rather than assuming collection will be immediate. Do not leave collection to overlap with key handover unless you have a reliable arrangement.
Confirm each completed transaction and remove its ad so you are not answering enquiries while unpacking. Create your first listing and use the sofa collection guide or wardrobe guide for the largest pieces.
