Selling Wool Jumpers and Knitwear in Ireland: Fit, Pilling and Care Labels
Describe second-hand knitwear with verified fabric labels, actual garment measurements and photographs of pilling, repairs and other wear.
Knitwear can change shape with wear and washing, so the size label is only a starting point for a buyer. An honest jumper listing explains the current fit, fabric and condition. Prepare it laid flat rather than stretching it on a hanger just before taking photographs.
Read the fabric label
List the fibre composition shown on the label. A soft feel is not enough to identify cashmere, merino or pure wool. If the composition label is missing, say that the material is unverified instead of making a premium-fabric claim.
Include the brand, labelled size and any model information you know. Distinguish a deliberately oversized design from a garment that has stretched. If it has shrunk, make that part of the description rather than relying on the original size.
Measure without pulling the fabric
Lay the garment naturally flat and record underarm width, shoulder-to-hem length and sleeve length. Explain the method, especially for unusual shoulder shapes. Do not stretch the jumper to reach a more appealing measurement.
For a cardigan, check the fastenings and measure it in a consistent closed or open position. Mention missing buttons, repaired buttonholes and any spare button included. A clear flat photograph can also show whether the hem sits evenly.
Show wear at a useful scale
Photograph the front, back, cuffs and underarm areas. Include pilling, thinning, holes, marks and visible repairs. Small defects may still be acceptable to a buyer if they are disclosed before collection.
Follow the care label when cleaning. Do not try an unfamiliar hot wash or aggressive treatment merely to improve the appearance for sale. If the garment needs specialist cleaning, describe that requirement without guaranteeing an outcome.
Choose single listings or coherent bundles
A distinctive jumper may suit its own ad. A bundle should have a clear size range, item count and separate notes about condition. Avoid including several lower-quality extras while presenting the whole group as equally unworn.
Compare similar materials and condition when pricing, then weigh the packed garment if posting. Keep it dry and protected until handover. Place a knitwear ad, or use the winter coat guide to list outerwear separately.
