Posting Second-Hand Items in Ireland: Seller Checklist

Plan postage for second-hand items in Ireland by checking carrier acceptance, packed dimensions, weight, packaging and the agreed delivery service.

Before posting second-hand items in Ireland, confirm that the chosen carrier accepts the actual contents and destination, then measure and weigh the finished parcel. Agree the item price, delivery charge and service privately. Tracking and a fragile label do not automatically establish compensation cover.

Before you start

  • Identify batteries, fragile materials and other restricted contents.
  • Check the current rules for the exact service and destination.
  • Quote delivery from the packed parcel rather than the bare item.

Check the item before choosing the service

Identify what is inside the package, including batteries, liquids, fragile materials and accessories. A familiar household product may still be restricted by a carrier. Do not assume that an item can travel because a shop originally delivered it to you.

Consult the carrier's current rules directly. An Post's prohibited and restricted items page includes important limitations, including for batteries and fragile goods. Check the exact service and destination with the provider before accepting payment for postage.

Measure the packed parcel

Select suitable packaging first, then measure the outside dimensions and weigh the complete parcel. A padded box can place a lightweight item into a different size band. Keep the measurements and the quote together so you can explain the delivery charge accurately.

For a bundle, confirm all contents before quoting. Adding several books or an extra accessory after weighing may change the price. Do not treat an example quote for another parcel as a fixed rate for your own.

Pack for movement rather than a photograph

Use a sound outer container, appropriate cushioning and secure separation between pieces. Avoid loose components that can strike a screen or scratch a finish. Follow the carrier's packaging guidance and the product manufacturer's transport instructions where relevant.

Check whether the service's compensation terms cover the actual contents. A tracking number does not mean that every form of loss or damage is covered. Fragile, valuable or awkward items may be better suited to an agreed collection or specialist service.

Agree the complete delivery arrangement

Confirm the item price, delivery charge, destination and selected service privately with the buyer. Explain when you expect to dispatch without promising an arrival date you cannot control. Keep the receipt and any tracking information after handing the parcel to the carrier.

Verify payment independently through your usual provider. Do not enter security details into a buyer-supplied courier link; the payment-link scam guide explains that risk.

If posting does not make sense, say that collection is required before the buyer commits. Use local collection guidance for a clear appointment. When you place an ad, describe the delivery options you can genuinely provide rather than adding nationwide postage automatically.
