How to Handle Offers When Selling Online in Ireland

Respond to offers with a clear asking price, agreed collection details and a sensible hold policy, without confusing reservations with completed sales.

Messages about price are easier to handle when you have decided what you are offering and what you would accept. An offer is only one part of a local sale: collection, included accessories and timing also need agreement. Keep those details together instead of treating each message as a separate negotiation.

Set your own limits first

Choose an asking price based on relevant comparisons and the item's actual condition. Decide privately whether you will negotiate, split a bundle or offer delivery. You do not have to explain your lowest acceptable price to every enquirer.

Check the marketplace's rules about offers and accepted deals before negotiating. Avoid using a low advertised price merely to start an auction. If the price or package changes, update the listing so later buyers see the current offer.

Reply with a complete proposal

If an offer is acceptable, confirm the item, price, accessories and collection arrangement in the conversation. For example: “I can accept €80 for the desk, collection in Naas on Saturday; chair not included.” That is clearer than a short “yes” after several different suggestions.

If you decline, a brief polite response is enough. You can state that the price is firm without arguing about another seller's listing. Do not claim to have competing offers if you do not; a made-up deadline creates pressure without helping the transaction.

Agree what a hold means

An interested message is different from a confirmed collection slot. Explain whether you will reserve the item and until when. If the buyer stops responding, send a reasonable update rather than sharing the address with several people and letting them compete to arrive first.

Tell other enquirers that collection is pending when appropriate. Keep the public availability accurate, and avoid treating a reservation as proof that payment has been made. Independently verify any payment before releasing the item.

Reconfirm changes before handover

If the buyer asks for delivery, a reduced bundle or a different time, confirm the revised arrangement before travelling. Do not accept pressure to follow an unexpected payment link or share account codes to secure a sale.

After inspection and the agreed handover, mark the item sold. Keep messages relevant to the transaction and report abusive or suspicious behaviour through the site's reporting tools. Post an item for sale or use better listing photos to answer more questions before offers arrive.
