Selling a car privately in Ireland involves preparing a useful advert, answering buyer questions and completing the handover properly. A clear listing can reduce unnecessary enquiries, while organised paperwork makes the final sale easier to manage.

Start by gathering the facts about the car before deciding on photographs or price.

Prepare the vehicle details

Record the make, model, year, mileage, fuel type, transmission and relevant specification. Check the current NCT status and expiry date, where applicable.

Gather service records, information about previous repairs and the Vehicle Registration Certificate. Describe known mechanical issues, warning lights and bodywork damage honestly.

Avoid vague claims such as “full service history” if you only have some records. Explain what documentation you actually have.

Compare similar cars before setting a price

Look for the same model with a similar year, mileage, engine and specification. Consider condition and documented maintenance.

A dealer’s asking price may include services or protections that your private sale does not provide. Use comparisons carefully rather than treating every advertised car as equivalent.

Decide whether your price is negotiable and how much room you are comfortable leaving for an offer.

Write an advert that answers practical questions

Use a title containing the year, make and model, followed by an important detail such as engine or transmission.

Photograph the exterior from several angles, the interior, boot, dashboard and any visible damage. Remove personal belongings and avoid publishing photographs of private paperwork.

Include your general location, mileage, NCT information, service records and known faults. Explain how buyers should contact you and arrange a viewing.

Manage viewings and test drives

Agree a viewing time and allow the buyer to inspect the vehicle. Be prepared for questions about servicing, ownership and repairs.

Before any test drive, confirm that the driver has the appropriate licence and insurance arrangements. Do not assume your insurance covers a prospective buyer.

Keep control of keys and documents, and avoid handing over the car because someone shows a payment screenshot. Confirm payment through your own bank or payment provider.

Complete the ownership change

Ireland has an online service for eligible private-to-private vehicle ownership transfers. The Department of Transport explains that ownership changes must be notified and provides information about online and offline procedures. Follow the official process appropriate to your sale. Department of Transport ownership guidance.

Complete the transfer as part of the handover and retain the relevant confirmation. Prepare a sale receipt recording the vehicle registration, date, agreed price and buyer and seller details.

Remove personal information from the infotainment system, disconnect linked accounts where applicable and gather the agreed keys and accessories.

Once the sale is complete, mark the advert sold everywhere it was published. To begin, prepare your details and place your car ad on ClassifiedAds.ie.
