How to Sell a Used Bicycle in Ireland: Frame Size, Condition and Collection

Prepare a bicycle ad with the right frame size, component details and honest condition notes, then arrange a practical local viewing in Ireland.

A bicycle buyer wants to know whether the bike fits, whether it works and what they will need to spend after buying it. An ad that answers those questions is more useful than a long list of cycling terms. Start with the actual bike in front of you and record details you can verify.

Identify the frame and type of bike

Give the brand, model and approximate age if known. State whether it is a road, mountain, hybrid, folding or children's bike. Include the frame size shown on the bike and the wheel size where you can identify it. A previous rider's height can offer context, but it does not replace the measurements or guarantee a fit.

If components have changed, describe what is fitted now. Do not copy specifications from a current model with the same name: manufacturers can change equipment between versions.

Describe maintenance and wear

Explain when the bike was last serviced and what work was done, if you have records. Mention worn tyres, rusty parts, damaged grips, missing accessories or known issues with shifting and braking. Being stored indoors does not by itself establish mechanical condition.

Clean the frame enough to show its condition. Photograph both sides, the drivetrain, wheels and any damage. If you are uncertain about a fault, say so rather than suggesting that it is definitely a cheap fix. Avoid offering an unsafe bike as ready to ride.

Compare complete packages

Compare asking prices for bikes of a similar type, age and condition. A bike with service records and usable tyres is a different proposition from one needing immediate attention. List exactly which lights, mudguards, racks or locks are included. Keep an expensive accessory out of the photographs if it is not part of the sale, or explain the exclusion clearly.

Plan the viewing

Choose a suitable meeting location and agree any test-ride arrangements before the buyer arrives. Keep control of the handover and do not release the bike on the strength of a payment screenshot. Provide any ownership documents you have without exposing unrelated personal information publicly.

Once collected, mark the listing sold. You can place a bicycle ad or read the broader guide to selling unwanted items in Ireland.
