An unused phone can still be valuable, but buyers need to understand exactly what they are purchasing. Before you sell a used phone in Ireland, check its condition, prepare an accurate description and remove your personal information properly.

A listing that answers questions about storage, battery condition and repairs is more useful than one that simply says “excellent phone”.

Identify the exact phone

Confirm the manufacturer, model, storage capacity and colour. Check whether it is network locked or unlocked rather than assuming either.

For an iPhone, record the battery health information available in Settings. For other phones, describe any noticeable battery problems honestly instead of inventing a percentage.

State what is included: the phone, box, charger, cable, case or other accessories. Mention previous repairs, replacement parts and known faults.

Test the features a buyer will ask about

Check the screen, cameras, speakers, microphone, charging connection and buttons. Where practical, check Wi-Fi, mobile connectivity and fingerprint or face recognition.

If something does not work consistently, include that in the ad. A charging socket that needs the cable held at an angle is a defect, even if the phone still charges.

Photograph the front, back, edges and any damage. Avoid displaying messages, personal photographs or account details on the screen.

Set a price for the actual condition

Compare the same model and storage capacity. Account for battery condition, cosmetic damage, repairs and included accessories.

Do not compare your private sale directly with a refurbished retailer’s offer without considering differences such as warranty and returns.

Choose an asking price you can explain using the phone’s condition and what is included.

Back up and remove your information

For an iPhone, follow Apple’s current instructions for transferring information, signing out and erasing the device. Do not manually delete photographs or contacts while signed into iCloud as a substitute for preparing the phone: those deletions can also affect iCloud and connected devices. For Android, back up your information, remove your Google accounts from the device and follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions. Google provides guidance on removing accounts and resetting an old Android phone.

Remove physical SIM and memory cards where applicable. Deal with your eSIM according to the device and network instructions. Never give a buyer your account password or recovery codes.

Arrange a careful handover

Let the buyer inspect the phone and confirm that it is ready for their own setup. Agree payment beforehand and verify it independently before releasing the device.

Keep a record of the agreed sale and mark the listing sold afterwards.
